Religious Customs

Central content

The people in Baisha Township and their livelihoods are shaped by their environment. As the early settlers had to contend with very difficult conditions, all kinds of religious rites large and small are held every year to thank the gods and spirits for their protection and to pray for health, happiness, and protection against accidents and disaster.
Baisha's villages all have their own religious customs and more than a few temples. Wuyin ("Five Forts") and stone tablets are also set up around the villages to ward against evil and misfortune. While there are some outside religions, the local residents' religious tend towards Buddhism or Taoism though in practice, the emphasis is on respect for the heavens, veneration of ancestors as well as worshipping of Buddhist and Taoist gods. In general, the Taoist influence is stronger.
