Agriculture and Fishery

Agriculture The seasonal winds and salty rains meant that arable soil and water resources were very limited in Baisha Township. Over time, the local industries developed in ways different from Taiwan. Rocks were used to build stone wind breaks and their sheltered side used to grow peanuts, melons and yams. Cash crops such as the Chiapao melon, cantaloupe, waxberry and pitaya are also grown and Baisha Township leads the rest of Penghu in terms of output. The "beehive farms" and "melon mountains" are now a unique feature of Baisha's agriculture and part of its cultural landscape.

FisheryBaisha Township is surrounded by the sea on three sides. To the north is Beician Fishery, the largest in Penghu, and to the west lies Neihai Fishery with its rich fishing resources. As for the waters between Gupou Island and Baisha Island, this is the largest silver anchovy fishery in Penghu. When the fishing season comes around in summer, night-trawling of silver anchovies forms one of the most famous sights of the Chihkan region.

Baisha Township is currently working to combine coastal fishing operations with tourism. By turning traditional fishing activities such as "Hauling the Net", "Building Rock Piles", "Checking the Weirs" and "Night Squid Fishing" into activities that tourists can experience for themselves, this opens new opportunities for the traditional fishing industry.
